Financial support is available to help LGBTQ+ students at Sheffield Hallam manage tuition, living costs, and unexpected challenges.

From scholarships to emergency grants, this guide walks you through the financial support on offer and where to get help. At Hallam, creating an inclusive, supportive environment for all students is a priority.

1. Tuition fees and financial support

Student Success scholarship:

This scholarship offers financial awards between £200 and £2,000 for eligible full-time and part-time UK students. Awards are based on financial need, with part-time students receiving a proportionate amount based on their course intensity. Find out if you're eligible here.

Bursaries and scholarships

The university provides various bursaries and scholarships aimed at supporting students from diverse backgrounds. These financial aids are designed to alleviate the financial burden of higher education and are accessible to students who meet specific eligibility criteria.

2. Living costs and emergency support

Hallam Hardship Fund

You may be eligible to receive a one-off payment if you are experiencing unforeseen financial difficulties. This offers non-repayable financial assistance to students experiencing financial difficulties, covering essential living costs. These are available to both home and international students. Emergency vouchers

Emergency vouchers provide temporary assistance if you have an immediate financial crisis. You can request a voucher if you are unable to buy food, toiletries or other essential items and have no other alternatives. Request a voucher.

International emergency fund

The International Emergency Fund is available to support international students who encounter significant short-term financial difficulties caused by unexpected changes in their circumstances or severe personal issues.

Exceptional support fund

The Exceptional Support Fund (ESF) is part of the NHS Learning Support Fund and is available to students studying certain health courses. It is for students experiencing unforeseen financial hardship, who have exhausted all other means of funding.

This fund is administered and funded by the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA), not Sheffield Hallam University.

3. Inclusive Support Services

Sheffield Hallam provides a welcoming, respectful space for LGBTQ+ students. Support includes:

  • One-to-one sessions with LGBTQ+ advisers
  • Access to wellbeing and academic services
  • Independent financial and academic advice from the Students' Union
