Why do you want to be elected as a Students' Union Officer?
I am passionate about conducting research which will make a genuine change for individuals within a community. I believe that by collating student responses regarding changes they believe should be made, the Student's Union will be able to gage an accurate depiction of the things that will allow for a better University community and a greater sense of well-being on campus. I also believe that by taking on-board student's thoughts and feelings, they will feel as though they have been instrumental in making changes, which will hopefully spur them on in collaborating with course and department reps for further change.
What would your priorities be as an Officer?
Continue the cost of living support offered and make it more known (i.e. the monthly period packages, community fridge, and keeping prices of food down). Make this more accessible to those with allergens/intolerances - concerns regarding cross-contamination.
Have a nurse visit bi-monthly to discuss STD's, pregnancy, and general health concerns to combat stigma. This comes as it is becoming difficult to get an appointment at Student Health.
Improve communication between students and teaching staff, prep work is sometimes not uploaded until the day before it needs doing, meaning those with other priorities do not have enough time to complete tasks.
What skills and experience do you have that would make you a good Officer?
I have completed my BSc and am completing my MSc, meaning I have excellent research and communication skills from interviewing students for my dissertation. This research discussed sexual health and violence, so this is something that I am educated on and have a passion for. I also work as a Student Ambassador and communicate with potential students to promote Hallam on Open Days as well as working as a member of the Student Recruitment Team. I have brilliant organisational and team-working skills gained from working 3 jobs during my undergraduate degree, and partaking in group projects as part of this.
