Why do you want to be elected as a Students' Union Officer?
As a current officer and Hallam graduate, I have lived and breathed Sheffield Hallam University for the past 4 years. I understand how important students are to SHU, and vice versa. I have experience representing the student population on University, Students’ Union and Community decision making boards. Sport and physical activity can be fundamental in creating positive student experience at University, and I want to ensure student voice is utilised to create a sport and physical activity environment which is inclusive and accessible to all students.
What would your priorities be as an Officer?
Shaping the future. Ensuring student voice is embedded within the next SHU Sport and Physical Activity Strategy.
Student wellbeing. Promoting student wellbeing through developing SHU wellbeing resources, and creating an SU wellbeing webpage signposting to accessible resources.
Protecting Wednesday afternoons! I will lobby the University to continue keeping Wednesday afternoon’s free for the majority of students, encouraging participation in Sports Clubs and Societies.
Cost of sport support. The cost of living crisis has worsened the financial barrier to sport faced by students. I want to increase awareness of the Sport Hardship Fund and the activities it covers.
What skills and experience do you have that would make you a good Officer?
As the current Officer, I understand what It means to be a student representative. I have spent this year listening to the student body in order to understand the current issues and what students want done to fix them. To date I have provided Sport Club Committees with a meaningful feedback forum in which to share their experiences with sport at Hallam to staff, and worked to change Hallam Students’ Union approach to drug and alcohol consumption to harm reduction rather than zero tolerance. I am experienced in attending Students’ Union and University meetings and boards.
