Lead Reps are an amazing group of students that work tirelessly alongside their studies. They're employed part-time by us (Hallam SU) to collect feedback from Course Reps and work with academics to make the student experience better.

We've changed their name this year as the term Department is no longer used - in their first meeting the new Reps decided 'Lead Rep' was a good description of what their job will entail in the new Schools and Institutes system.

What does a Lead Rep do?

Lead Reps are selected annually by a team consisting of College Officers, the representation team, and, when possible, a panellist from their department. These reps play a crucial role in gathering and addressing feedback from Course Reps and escalating broader issues to higher-level meetings. Their main goal is to ensure that staff can make well-informed decisions that positively impact as many students as possible within their departments.

Each Lead Rep sets three key objectives for the academic year:

  1. Personal Development: The first objective is focused on personal growth. Each Lead Rep identifies what they want to achieve personally throughout the year. After all, you can't help others until you've helped yourself.

  2. Departmental Project: The second objective involves a project aimed at improving their specific department. For example, last year, Lead Rep Aimee worked to create a wellbeing plan for student nurses to take onto placement with them so placement providers have support needs documented.

  3. NSS Score Improvement: The final objective is to improve the National Student Survey (NSS) score for their department. This begins on a micro level by analysing previous NSS scores and identifying areas for improvement.
