You’ve just had your results through, the celebrations are starting to wind down and now you’ve remembered you actually have to start packing to move away from home!

This can seem intimidating at first but I promise you - it’s not. Many first year students will tell you they over packed when they were in your position, I definitely did. The best advice I was given when moving here was “don’t worry if you’ve forgotten things, you can get them whilst you’re there. You’re moving to Sheffield, not the sahara desert!”.

We’ve put together a packing list of all the things you’ll want to bring with you, ready to start your university life!

Bedroom:

• Duvet, Duvet Cover & Sheets (pack a couple so you’ve got spares come laundry day)

• Mattress Protector

• Pillows & Pillow Cases

• Homely Decorations (this will help if you start to feel homesick)

• Photos & Posters (don’t forget blu tack or command strips to help fix these to the walls!)

• Stationery & Books

• Laptop, Chargers, Speakers, TVs, Games Consoles - whatever tech you might want/need

• Extension Leads

• Bags (a small one for a night out & one to take all you need with you to lectures & seminars)

• Clothes, Shoes & IMPORTANTLY Coat Hangers - Don’t feel you need to bring your whole wardrobe with you, I would recommend packing warm clothes and a good coat as Sheffield gets cold pretty quickly!

• Clothes Horse & Laundry Bag

• Waste Paper Bin

• Purse, Wallet, Cards, ID, Passport, Visa Travel Documents etc. & any other important documents so you have everything in the same place

• Medicines - you’ll need your own first aid kit now you’re fending for yourselves, I’d recommend painkillers, plasters & cold medicine for when freshers flu hits!

Bathroom:

• Shampoo, Conditioner, Shower Gel

• Toothbrush & Toothpaste

• Hand Soap

• Deodorant

• Skincare

• Make-Up

• Sanitary Products

• Razors & Shaving Cream

• Hairbrush, Hair Products, Hair Dryer & Hair Straighteners

• Toilet Roll

• Towels & Hand Towels

• Toilet Cleaner, Toilet Brush, Bleach - some halls provide these anyway but this is definitely something you want to take with you from the get-go

• A Wash Bag or Plastic Box - these are perfect to keep all your bathroom bits & bobs in

Kitchen:

• Glasses & Mugs - bring no more than two of each so there will always be one in the cupboard whilst the other is in use

• Saucepans & Frying Pans

• Baking Trays (pizza baking trays are definitely an essential for the amount I guarantee you’ll end up eating!)

• Chopping Boards

• Cutlery & Kitchen Knives

• Plates & Bowls - again, no more than two of each or it’s more washing up!

• Scissors

• Pizza Cutter, Wooden Spoons, Corkscrew, Spatula - not essential to bring straight away but worth picking some up when you’ve got settled

• Tea Towels & Oven Gloves

• Tin Foil & Cling Film

• Tupperware Containers

Cleaning Essentials:

• Bin Bags

• Cloths

• Antibacterial Wipes

• Antibacterial Spray

• Washing Up Liquid

• Softener & Detergent

• Dustpan & Brush

Now whilst some of that may not be relevant to you all, it definitely has enough on there to help you with your packing. Don’t panic if you think you may have forgotten things - there are plenty of places in Sheffield where you can go and pick them up (with student discounts available in places too!).
