What is Period Poverty?

Period poverty refers to the inability to afford or access menstrual products due to financial constraints. This can lead to significant challenges for individuals, including:

  • Hygiene issues: Lack of access to sanitary products can lead to hygiene problems, infections, and discomfort.
  • Educational disruptions: Girls may miss school or be unable to participate fully in activities due to their periods.
  • Social isolation: The stigma associated with menstruation can lead to social isolation and discrimination.
  • Health risks: Unsanitary practices during menstruation can increase the risk of health problems, such as reproductive tract infections.

These issues highlight the significant impact of period poverty on young people and underscore the urgent need for solutions to ensure that everyone has reliable access to menstrual products.

By educating students about the challenges faced by those who menstruate and promoting open discussions about periods, we can help create a more inclusive and informed student community.

'Caught Short' points across campus:

There are several locations across campus, where students can also access free period products:

  • Hallam Help Point on Owen level 5
  • Porter Brook Medical Centre
  • Hallam Help Point in Adsetts Library
  • Hallam Help Point at Heart of the Campus
  • Hallam Help Point at Collegiate Library
  • The Student's Union
  • Pearson's Building Gym (Reception)
  • Medical Centre (Surrey level 1)

Our Mission:

As an end goal, we suggest that Sheffield Hallam University should, as part of the student wellbeing initiative, be providing period products in campus bathrooms to all who require the use of them, to facilitate a more inclusive learning experience for all students.
