Refugee Week is the world's largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity, and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.
Established in the UK in 1998, the annual festival aligns with World Refugee Day which is celebrated globally on 20 June.
This year's celebrations run from 17-23 June, and we have some interesting volunteering opportunities for students to get involved in.
Events and volunteering opportunities include:
- Volunteer at Hallam's Refugee Rights Fashion Show (Runs all week until 21 June) - Support Hallam's Refugee Rights Hub in organising and coordinating a charity fashion show to raise money for its pro-bono legal services and other local organisations supporting refugees.
- Volunteer as a Digital Champion in local libraries (18 June) - Support digital inclusion by helping individuals in local libraries with basic digital skills such as emailing, printing, and using google.
- Volunteer to teach English to speakers of other languages (21 June) - Help teach English to refugees, asylum seekers, and those who've newly arrived in Sheffield from across the world.
- Migration Matters Festival (14-22 June) - The UK's largest Refugee Week festival, Migration Matters, returns to Sheffield with an extensive programme of music, comedy, conversation, art, theatre, film, and more.
You can learn more about Refugee Week and the various talks, workshops, and events happening across the UK on the official Refugee Week website.
