Based on student feedback from our latest Cost of Living Survey (May 2024), we've crafted a set of recommendations that will enable us to develop student support and lobby for positive change - at a local and national level - to help ease the burden on our students.
As a result, we're lobbying the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) - those responsible for economic development, transport, and regeneration in South Yorkshire - for cheaper transport for students. We want SYMCA to make the Zoom Pass available for ALL students across South Yorkshire, regardless of age, on both trams and buses, and we're also asking for a reduction in fares.
We met with the South Yorkshire Mayor, Oliver Coppard, on 28 October to discuss these requests.
We'd like to thank eveyone who provided feedback by sending in their commuter stories and would now encourage students to complete the Mayor's bus consultation to show how powerful student voices are.
Have your say on Bus Reform in South Yorkshire
The Mayor has since opened a public consultation on taking back control of South Yorkshire's buses through bus franchising.
This will give SYMCA powers to decide:
- what routes buses take
- what times they run
- the quality of the service
- how many ticket options are available
- what the fares will cost
- how to improve reliability of the bus network
- how buses, trams, and trains connect with each other
You can find more information in their Consultation Document (PDF) or the Consultation Summary (PDF).
SYMCA want to hear your views on the proposals:
