Handsworth Warehouse Volunteer

This opportunity is ongoing, with no end date.

Warehouse Volunteers manage the daily running of Food Works Handsworth. They sort intercepted food, pack orders for cafe’s and run the market. We save around 10 - 12 tonnes of food every week and serve around 100 customers per day in our market. Tasks include sorting, weighing and storing intercepted food as well as serving customers.

Food Works is a not-for-profit organisation with the aim to create a more sustainable food system in Sheffield while reducing food waste. Our warehouse is the heart of the operation. Based in Handsworth our van drivers bring all the intercepted food here. As a warehouse assistant there are many roles you can undertake on any day. In the market these include: Serving customers, helping select their items, taking payments using our till system and packing market boxes. On the Intercept side: sorting the food into categories, weighing the food and sorting into stores, ensuring the food is stored correctly.

During your time volunteering you will always be supported by an experienced Hub manager. In this role there is an opportunity to learn about: stock taking and management, customer service and till use, storing food safely, packing orders, as well as building a sustainable food system that works for everyone!

Overview of Project

Food Works is a not-for-profit organisation with the aim to create a more sustainable food system in Sheffield while reducing food waste.

This Role Involves

Warehouse Assistant Our warehouse is the heart of the operation. Based in Handsworth our van drivers bring all the intercepted food here. As a warehouse assistant there are many roles you can undertake on any day. The Market: On the market you are working face to face with the customers. You help them select their fridge and freezer items and give them their market box. We have a simple system for taking payments which you will be trained in. We ask customers for £1 plus a donation no matter how big or small. This donation helps Food Works keep running. Running the market is a great way to get across to customers who Food Works are and what we do! We run 2 online inductions per month and hope to reintroduce in person inductions soon where you can come for a nice afternoon and get all the information you need. Another role on the market is packing the market boxes for customers. This involved picking items from the selection by the duty manager and creating a good standard of box for them to collect. Intercept: The food that the drivers bring back to Food Works is intercepted from supermarkets and food supplies before it goes to landfill. Most of the food is perfectly in date and edible, it is astounding how much good food goes to waste! It is the intercept volunteers role to sort the food that comes in into categories and stores. Categories include frozen meat, fruit and vegetables, chilled items and waste. The food gets stored correctly and any waste gets put into animal feed or compost. Before being stored the food has to be weighed and recorded. This is part of the intercept role you will be trained on and it helps us keep track of the food that we have saved. Order packer: Orders may include Patron boxes (weekly subscription box), Orders for our cafe and other orders for organisations.
