Fulfilling, fun and motivational - just a few of the ways volunteers describe their experience leading or helping at Totley Scouts. We are looking for adults who are keen to try new things and have fun, to join our team of Scout Leaders and help us continue providing fantastic opportunities to local young people in our two thriving Scout troops.

Our Leaders are people just like you, but working together they make extraordinary things happen by providing a wide range of activities on a weekly basis. You might think you need to have worked with children or young people to be able to become a leader, but actually, our leaders have all sorts of different backgrounds. Amongst our current leaders and helpers, we have an operations manager, a project manager and civil servants, whilst others are in teaching or childcare. You don’t have to have been in Scouting yourself, either! We are open to boys and girls from all faiths, backgrounds and abilities, and welcome everyone.

We meet weekly & are looking for someone to join our team of Leaders. If you can't be there every week that's OK, we understand and welcome you when you can come. Perhaps you could help us plan some of our fantastic activities or day trips instead. Whatever time you have to give, we can find a role for you that you will find rewarding.

Join us as a leader and you’ll learn career-friendly skills, boost your wellbeing, and make new friends. Because volunteering at Scouts is a two-way street – good for young people, and good for you too.

ASSIST is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation run by a Board of Trustees. We provide accommodation, food and support for asylum seekers in Sheffield who are in conditions of need, hardship or distr

At ASSIST Sheffield we support some of the most marginalised people living in Sheffield - people who have been unsuccessful in their applications for asylum and as a result have been made destitute. Many of them have escaped the horrors of war, violence and persecution, but simply telling the truth about the conditions they have fled sadly isn't always enough.

Without refugee status, people seeking sanctuary are not allowed to work. Once their initial application for asylum has been turned down many are left with no right to housing, benefits or other vital support. They're left homeless, destitute and vulnerable on the streets of our city.

This is where we come in. ASSIST is an invaluable lifeline for people in Sheffield who've been refused asylum. We offer solidarity, support and hope in the form of accommodation, information and access to essential services.

We are a charity and we rely on volunteers, grants and the generosity of the people of Sheffield and the surrounding area.

  • Children's Bereavement Centre logo

    Children's Bereavement Centre

We support bereaved 3–18-year-olds and their families from Nottinghamshire and South Lincolnshire. We provide free 1:1 counselling, peer support group, advice, training and residential.

The Children’s Bereavement Centre was founded in 2003. We support 3–18-year-olds and their families from Nottinghamshire and South Lincolnshire. We are the only free children’s bereavement service in the area, serving a population of approximately 1.2 million people. All the children are experiencing life-changing trauma due to the death or terminal illness of someone they love, often one or both parents. The bereavement can be unexpected due to illness, accident, murder or suicide.

Due to the traumatic loss, bereaved children are more likely to have behavioural problems and mental health difficulties. We help families build resilience and improve wellbeing. Children are empowered with the tools to adjust to the loss, reducing their risk of negative behaviour and health problems. Children from low socio-economic backgrounds are more likely to be disproportionately affected by bereavement. Approximately 50% of the families we support live in deprived areas, and the bereavements they suffer often have a large financial impact.

We receive referrals from CAMHS, schools, the Police, GPs, and families themselves and plug a gap in social care provision. 1:1 and group bereavement support are delivered by qualified counsellors and trained volunteers. This includes play therapy, art therapy, peer support group and annual bereavement residential. All this support is free for families, so costs are not a barrier for them accessing the support they so desperately need. We also provide specialist training for schools, parents/carers, and childcare professionals. Our aim is to empower the wider community through improving knowledge and skills to provide a network of effective support around every bereaved child.

We are based in Newark but have bereavement hubs in Mansfield, Worksop, Nottingham and Rushcliffe.

  • Friends of Loxley Cemetery logo

    Friends of Loxley Cemetery

The Friends of Loxley Cemetery was set up to restore the badly neglected graveyard, to provide safe access to all the grave plots, and to maintain the environmental integrity of the site.

Loxley Chapel and cemetery date back to the 18th century, and played a very important role in the Loxley Valley area for over 200 years. For most of its life it had been a non-conformist chapel. The chapel, a grade 2* listed building, closed in 1993, was sold to a private developer, and neglected for years. In 2016 it was sold on to another developer, and sadly burnt down, so the building is now a ruin. The cemetery became seriously overgrown.

The cemetery, which surrounds the chapel on all four sides, has over 4000 grave plots and covers almost 10 acres, including War Commission graves and victims of the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864. By 2020 the cemetery was completely overgrown with trees and other vegetation, so much so that it was impossible to see any headstones. The Friends of Loxley Cemetery group was set up by someone who had a family grave in the cemetery and whose mother wished to be buried there. Unfortunately, although the group was set up in 2019, the pandemic intervened and it was not until 2021 that volunteers started to clear the graves.

It has been hard work but our small group of regular volunteers has made great progress and much of the cemetery is now accessible. However, we are mostly retired folk and we need some strong, energetic volunteers to help us out. Even though most of the worst of the weeds have been cleared, the grass etc grows at a fast pace and we find it challenging to keep up! We wouls also appreciate help with heavy work such as righting fallen headstones. We have work sessions at the cemetery every Saturday afternoon, 1.30-4pm, with a tea and biscuit beark around 3pm.

Friends of Whirlow Brook Park are restoring the park and gardens which have been neglected. This involves planting, digging, weeding, pruning, sweeping, painting benches, construction and much more.

The Friends of Whirlow Brook Park group started in March 2021, so a relatively new park group. It became a registered charity on  The park is situated on Ecclesall Rd South on the right hand side as you are coming from the City Centre. It is set back from the road on a small crescent and has a long drive up to the main car park where we meet for our volunteer sessions. We have around 30 active volunteers, but a normal gardening session usually attracts around 20 so we are always very keen to have more. We would love to host a number of students on our volunteer days. You will be given full instructions on what to expect and a health and safety talk. Please wear appropriate clothing and boots or wellies as it can get quite muddy - not white trainers! . All tools and gloves are provided.

We believe that there is a future and a hope for them and that language plays a key role in providing them with opportunities and helping them to integrate.

Hope English School was set up in 2016 to respond to the challenges being faced by refugees, asylum seekers and the organisations who work with them. These challenges include:  Government funding cuts, long waiting lists, gender barriers and long travel distances to classes.

In 2020, in light of the growing digital inequalities, we decided to launch our digital skills training course specifically designed for speakers of other languages.

We offer three services, depending on the needs of our students, these are one-to-one ESOL, community ESOL classes and Digital Skills training.

All our classes are prepared and delivered by CELTA qualified and highly experienced teachers, who have a passion seeing our students grow in their English and digital abilities, as well as in their hope, aspirations and opportunities for their future.

Our small class sizes, creche facilities and women-only class options make us easy for all to access and help us to maintain a high quality of service.

  • Independent Monitoring Board logo

    Independent Monitoring Board

IMB members are the eyes and ears of the public, appointed by ministers to perform a vital task: independent monitoring of prisons and immigration detention.

Are you  a student or young person looking to develop your skillset and gain experience?

If the above applies to you, and you’re also looking for a voluntary role which provides insight into a world that few people see, then you could join our team of ordinary people doing an extraordinary role: independent monitors in prisons and immigration detention. All our members are unpaid public appointees, appointed by Ministers.

If so, independent monitoring boards (IMBs) at HMP Doncaster are looking for people who live locally (within 30 miles) to join them.

So why join our Boards? As one member says: “It could be the most rewarding thing you have ever done, and you can make a real difference to prison life. I was unemployed when I started volunteering and did not know how I would be able to re-enter the workplace after being out of work for so long. The experience and confidence I gained on the Board enabled me to get paid employment, which I now do alongside my volunteer role.”

Once members have received their security clearance, they have unrestricted access to the prison and can talk to any prisoner they wish to, out of sight and hearing of members of staff if necessary, in order to monitor day-to-day activity across the establishment. This provides an opportunity to report on whether individuals are being treated fairly and humanely and whether they are being given the support they need to turn their lives around.

We are looking for people who share our values and commitment and are keen to give back to their community. You will need to: be a good listener; always act with integrity; be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion; be able to analyse observed events and behaviour, make decisions and apply common sense. You will also need to work within a team, be a good communicator and have basic computer skills.

Above all we are looking for people with a non-judgemental and open-minded approach.

If this sounds like you then we would love to meet you. After an initial training period, you will be expected to commit to an average of 2-3 visits a month, which includes attendance at a monthly Board meeting.

Although this is an unpaid role, we pay travel and subsistence expenses, childcare/carer costs and, in certain circumstances, contributions towards loss of earnings.

You should be able to commit to at least one session, once a month. Each session will last a different length of time depending on what you are doing together.

How long do you want me to volunteer for?
You will be asked to make a commitment to volunteering as an Independent Visitor for a minimum of two years. However, many IVs and young people develop a strong friendship that can last beyond the young person reaching adulthood.

How old could the child be that I am matched with?
Children will be aged between 7-18 years. You will have the opportunity to state a preference if you wish to volunteer with a particular age group.

What activities would we be doing?
This is up to the child and their interests. We aim to match volunteers with a child that you have things in common with so this could be going shopping, playing football, baking etc. During training we will inspire you as to what activities you could do; we aim to find activities that are free to do.

Will it be the same child I see every time?
Once matched you will continue to volunteer with the same child until either one of you wants to end the relationship.

    Do I need experience?
Some knowledge and practical experience of involvement with children and young people would be helpful. However, no formal qualifications are needed and full training is given.

    Will I need any training?
Before becoming a volunteer you will have two days of training, covering everything you will need to be successful in your role. You will be asked to complete a DBS check and you will undergo a short interview after your training.

Read Easy Sheffield provides free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching for adults in Sheffield who want to learn to read.

Around 2.4 million people in England can't read or have significant reading difficulties which impact their daily lives and the opportunities available to them. Our aim is to help people develop the literacy skills they need to fulfil their potential.
We match people who want to improve their reading with trained volunteer reading coaches and provide coaching pairs with ongoing support and literacy resources.
By supporting people to tackle their reading difficulties we also help them to improve their employment opportunities, move on to other education or training if they wish and enable them to support their children or grandchildren with their own reading. In learning to read people become more independent, have improved confidence and self-esteem and can begin to explore the many other opportunities that life has to offer.

Re-engage provides vital, life-enhancing social connections for older people at a time in their lives when their social circles are diminishing.

Re-engage is making life less lonely for thousands of older people every year. Older people tell us that our volunteer-led activities make them happier and more able to trust others.

Our tea parties are monthly social groups open to people aged 75 and over, and give older people regular afternoons of conversation and laughter with friends of all ages.

Call companions is our telephone befriending service ensuring older people stay connected to the outside world. Call companions is available to anyone aged 75 and over who’s socially isolated and would like a regular chat over the phone with a friendly volunteer.

Our activity groups give people 75 and over the chance to do gentle exercise as they make connections with other people. Our activity groups in Birmingham, Bristol and the South West, London, Manchester, the Scottish Borders, Wales, and West Yorkshire, take place both face to face and online.

Sheffield Carers Centre is the city’s leading provider of services for adult unpaid carers, who look after a relative, partner, or friend who is unable to manage alone due to disability, illness, frailty, a mental health problem or an addiction. Established in 1993, we are part of a vibrant voluntary sector, and a member of the national Carers Trust network. We currently employ 25 staff and around 22 volunteers contribute to our work.

This can lead to carers feeling lonely and socially isolated. Our volunteers make a genuine difference to the lives of unpaid carers in Sheffield.

  • Sheffield General Cemetery Trust logo

    Sheffield General Cemetery Trust

Sheffield General Cemetery is a wonderful Victorian park where history and heritage (with impressive buildings and monuments) meets conservation and wildlife. All in the city of Sheffield

Sheffield General Cemetery used to be a pretty grim place where none but the brave would enter. Through the work of volunteers over the last thirty years, the Cemetery has become a wonderful park that the Victorians planned but never saw. They planted a vast range of interesting trees which are now mature and attract an abundance of wildlife. The General Cemetery is a richly historic site with very impressive buildings and monuments. The Victorians certainly knew how to put on a good show. There is even an Egyptian Gate that Cleopatra might have approved of.

Sheffield General Cemetery Trust (SGCT) helps maintains the site and carries out many activities within the Cemetery including:

Education tours and workshops; conservation work to maintain and enhance the monuments, the landscape and paths; historical research of the Cemetery and its occupants; developing and managing the recently restored Grade II* listed Samuel Worth Chapel as a new events and wedding venue.

Our aim is to encourage everyone to enjoy this historical site by walking its paths, learning its history or simply as a quiet place to sit and contemplate. Sheffield General Cemetery Trust is a registered charity (no. 1103158) dedicated to promoting and restoring the General Cemetery (located in the city of Sheffield UK) and to protecting it as a unique heritage site and haven for wildlife.

Our team of Community Nurses also care for around 450 patients a year in their own homes and each year, we help around 1,800 patients from Sheffield. In fact, of the £10 million pounds, it takes to deliver our services each year, only 25% of that comes from the NHS, meaning that £7.5 million pounds has to be raised from our retail shops, eBay, fundraising and from voluntary donations.

So by joining us as a volunteer, you can help us keep our chain of shops fully stocked with sorted donations by volunteering for 3 – 4 hours -  just once a week or support us at our one-off events. Our shops are all based in the heart of communities across the city, as are our amazing volunteers and we couldn’t do what we do without them.

Student volunteering has been an integral part of St Luke’s for many years now, not only for the individual volunteering but actually for the positive impact that students have on the communities that they volunteer in.

Volunteering provides a unique opportunity during your time at university to try something new and develop skills. For some, volunteering can be a route to employment, or a chance to help you decipher which careers you are more or less well suited to, due to the huge variety of volunteering opportunities now available in a range of different settings whilst making a difference to your local community.

We have many varied roles available within our shops, e-trading team and at our Donation Centre - the hub for sorting and processing our donations. For more information, please take a look at our current opportunities or get in touch.

Our longesrt walks are 75 minutes but most walks last one hour or less. After each walk there is an opportunity for walkers to socialise over a cuppa. Each walk meets at the same point each week, we do not break for school holidays, and has its own small team of Volunteer Walk Leaders who are supported by the scheme coordinator. Some walks attract upward of 30 people most weeks, others are much smaller. Most, but not all, of ourwalkers are retired because all our walks are during the day and in the daytime.

Our volunteers answer our phone line on Friday, Saturday & Sunday evenings/nights to talk to people who are scared, to provide kindness, reassurance, and a reminder that no matter who they are or where they are, they are not alone. Someone out there cares about their wellbeing.

  • The Access Project logo

    The Access Project

The Access Project supports students from under-resourced backgrounds to access top universities. We work with pupils to make good applications and transition to university.

The Access Project is an education charity supporting young people from under-resourced backgrounds across London, the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West. The programme provides GCSE students with expert mentorship and personalised academic tuition delivered by our team of volunteer tutors.

Today, young people in the UK from disadvantaged backgrounds are almost three times less likely to progress to a top-third university, compared to their peers working at a similar academic level. We want to change this. We help these young people to see university as something that is “for them”, to support them to make competitive applications and to get the grades they deserve so that they can fulfil their potential.

    The Brain Charity

We help people with all forms of neurological condition to lead longer, healthier, happier lives. There are more than 600 conditions affecting the brain, spine and nervous system.

Befriending is a weekly voluntary role, where a volunteer makes a telephone call to someone who has a neurological condition and/or supports someone with one. The aim is to be a calm, non-judgemental ear, and bring a bit of kindness and empathy their way. We ask that volunteers take on two befriendees where possible, so it would require 2 x 30-minute conversations each week. We do require a DBS enhanced and we can sort that out with volunteers unless they are on the DBS update service.

  • The Sheffield Cats Shelter logo

    The Sheffield Cats Shelter

The Sheffield Cats Shelter have been helping cats and kittens in need since 1897. We look after cats in our shelter that have had to be rehomed and we then find them great new homes to be adopted into

We re-home cats and kittens in need at our shelter and then find the ideal new home, and new owner, for
them. Cats come to us for many reasons, but we are determined to find them all a new home which is right
for them; this involves processing adoption applications made via our website and carefully considering the
merits of each so that we can be sure that the new home will be perfect for each individual cat. We currently
find new homes for around 400 cats per year, and whilst cats are in our shelter they are given the best
possible treatment, as well as any veterinary assistance they may need. We also ensure that all cats brought
to our shelter are neutered and vaccinated. As well as this, we provide ongoing support and advice to cat
owners via our website, email and phone; we are passionate about cat welfare across the city, which is why
we also supply neutering vouchers to cat owners who may otherwise not be able to afford it. We couldn’t
achieve all this without the wonderful support of the public and businesses of Sheffield, and we reach out
for donations via our website, social media platforms, and at events.

We organise key events for young people in the region - Get up to Speed with STEM and North Star.

Get up to Speed with STEM

Get up to Speed with STEM is a live, annual, one-day showcase event which aims to introduce, inform and inspire students, parents and teachers about the world of work in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing (STEM) sectors.

It’s a superb, highly interactive careers showcase which, for over ten years, has promoted STEM-related career opportunities to over 39,000 young people, educators and families from across the Sheffeld City Region and beyond. Each event sees Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham filled with fun and interactive exhibits from both local and national employers, to showcase their businesses, their industries and their employment opportunties.

    Who’s it for?

For Employers: Get up to Speed with STEM is an ideal platform to bring businesses together to promote and celebrate the sector’s success. The event gives companies the opportunity to showcase their services whilst helping to address the skills gap in STEM-related industries by demonstrating to young people how a STEM career can become their future.

For Young People aged 8-25: At this highly interactive careers showcase, there’s lots to see and do, with plenty of hands-on experiences. There’s also the chance to speak to employers and people already working in the industry, including apprentices and graduates. You can also find out about career pathways and opportunities.

For Educators: Find out about the wide range of career opportunities for young people across the sector, establish employer links, and connect the currriculum to real life experiences. Your students can explore the diverse range of opportunities and pathways available in a stimulating, fun and interactive way. Contributing to Gatsby Benchmarks 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Parents/Carers: This fantastic event will help you find out about options for your child in the industry sector and ask questions of employers and further education providers.

    North Star

Bringing young people, educators, scientists and businesses together to explore the future of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) in the South Yorkshire Region.

North Star Science School is an amazing one-day live event for school children in years 8 and 9. The vision is to combine science with curiosity and play to stimulate and inspire the next generation to consider the fascinating range of careers in STEAM subjects. We do this by showcasing the cutting edge of science and engineering, and promoting innovation and opportunity in the South Yorkshire region. So far, North Star events have reached over 3,000 young people from across South Yorkshire.

In a blended programme, the day will include inspirational talks from leading scientists and engineers, and students will engage in fun, creative activities, experiments and hands-on interactive workshops delivered by our partners. Professor Brian Cox, Britain’s leading physicist and science communicator will join us virtually on the Big Screen, opening the event and talking about the wonders of the universe.

Created by Professor Brian Cox CBE and Lord Andrew Mawson OBE in 2012, the amazing Science Summer School programme aims to make Britain the best place to do science and engineering, by inspiring the UK’s next generation of young scientists, engineers and inventors. North Star is South Yorkshire’s part of this fantastic Science School initiative. Originally introduced to help turn around a failing school in east London, the Science Summer School programme is now expanding nationally. New projects connecting directly with local communities are rolling out around the country with South Yorkshire leading the way.

  • Together Talks logo

    Together Talks

Together Talks is a telephone befriending service which aims to reduce isolation and loneliness within Bradford

About Together Talks (Flexible and remote volunteering)

Together Talks Telephone Befriending Service is looking for people who would like to join us in helping to provide support to as many people as possible during challenging times. Telephone Befriending has the potential to be an important aspect of the overall approach to helping the most isolated and lonely individuals in our society. Telephone Befriending can also benefit the volunteer befrienders who are similarly able to reengage with their community and may derive health benefits from regular volunteering.

Our aim is to alleviate feelings of anxiety, loneliness and isolation that may be experienced by many people across our communities, by contact from a volunteer befriender.

If you’re a friendly person who likes talking to people, then this is the role for you.

What does a Volunteer Telephone Befriender do?

This is an exciting new service and we expect the following to form the main part of the telephone befriending role:

    • To telephone Befriendee’s at their home for around 10 -30 minutes. You will arrange the exact times of your future calls direct with the Befriendee’s. This could range from once a day to once a week, but individual needs will be matched with your availability (From 6 to 10 calls).
    • To provide a telephone conversation, a listening ear and chat about interests and hobbies, helping to alleviate loneliness and feelings of isolation.
    • To provide companionship and human interaction at a time when this may be limited.
    • To provide an update after each call to the Together Talks support Team. This is so we can keep a track of the amount of befriending calls each volunteer is undertaking, the type of support being offered during these calls and if there is anything further required.
    • It is important to note telephone befriending is not counselling or therapy and other services must be sought if this is required.

    Benefits

    • You will gain new and transferable skills. We offer support for you to increase your own job-readiness and personal development, by offering training opportunities, volunteering experience and detailed references.

    Additional Information

    • We will assist you with a FREE DBS.
    • The exact amount of time you choose to commit is up to you, but all calls are to be made Monday - Friday, between 9:30am and 4:30pm only.
    • Unfortunately, we are not able to provide expenses for telephone calls made. Ongoing volunteer support and guidance will be provided by the Telephone Befriending Support Team.

    Yorkshire Natural History Museum

YNHM is a new museum dedicated to fossils and prehistoric life found in Yorkshire and the wider UK. We offer guided tours of our gallery, lab experience days and resources for academic study.

We are a small institution with big dreams, aiming to educate, inspire and entertain people of all ages with our specimens and knowledge of UK specific paleontology.

Our gallery of specimens is constantly being updated and our laboratory space will be open to the public from 01 December 2022 - allowing people to learn how to prepare fossils to museum standard and experience a laboratory setting guided by our in house paleontologist.

We are open to the public every day except wednesday, offer guided tours for cubs, clubs and schools and have resources available for researchers and academic study of our specimens.

Ideally we would love volunteers to join our small team and rotate roles to get the best experience! You would initially be covering front of house, the gift shop or the main gallery, but more specialised roles might be found once we get to know you and your skillset. Please see our website at www.ynhm.org and if interested, email us at volunteer@ynhm.org to express your interest.
