Sustainability is a hot topic - and rightly so.
At Hallam SU, we believe we have a responsibility to create positive change, for ourselves, our students, and the generations that will follow.
That's why we're committed to reducing our environmental footprint, and making it simple for students to do their part too.

Sustainability Strategy
We're committed to embedding sustainability into every aspect of our work, from the events we host and services we offer to how we interact with the environment and society. To achieve this, we're proud to launch our Sustainability Strategy, driven by Martha Mitchell, HSU President 2024/25.
Our strategy focuses on four key pillars - education, lobbying, actions, and accountability - that will help us empower students and HSU staff to make informed choices and foster a culture of sustainability at university and beyond.

Initiatives, projects, and campaigns
See what's going on at Hallam SU and the University.
Community Fridge
We collect donations of surplus food from local stores and food outlets and redistribute it to students, providing free food and reducing food waste.
Clothing and book swap
Students can refresh their wardrobes and bookshelves by swapping unwanted clothes, shoes, accessories, and books for something different.
Volunteering
We connect students with impactful environmental volunteering, such as litter picks and tree planting, to the help preserve Sheffield's green spaces.
Better buses campaign
We're working with SYMCA on their bus franchising consultation and lobbying for cheaper bus/tram fares and better routes and timetables.
We've already secured wider student fare coverage and fixed a single student ticket at £1.50 with First Bus.
£1 off with a reusable cup
Use your reusable cup at any University outlet and enjoy £1 off your drink.
Fossil free careers
We're lobbying the University to implement an Ethical Careers Policy that cuts ties with fossil fuel and mining companies and rejects endorsement of these industries.
Ethical careers and investments
We're lobbying the University to adopt ethical careers practices by excluding arms and extractive industries and prioritising sustainability, social justice, human rights, and wellbeing.
Societies
Join forces with like-minded students to promote positive change.

Help advocate for animal welfare, climate action, and anti-speciesism.
@hallamvegsociety
I believe we should do our part in protecting the planet for ourselves and other species that inhabit it. Even little steps make a big impact!
- Iris, President of Hallam's Sustainability Society
